Oni x Naked & Famous Collaboration

Not to focus too much on Naked & Famous (see our last week’s article on their Glow-In-The-Dark Denim), but this was just too good to pass up.  Via the good people over at Nordic Denim House, the Canadian brand has teamed up with Japanese Oni to produce a truly unique pair of denim.  While the collaborative piece upholds Naked & Famous‘ simplistic and minimal style, one can easily note Oni‘s well known slubby look and feel.

For those not too familiar with the history and meaning of Oni, the company name technically stands for “O.N. International Co. Ltd.”, but is also known as the demons in Japanese folklore stories (hence the demon imagery in its logo).  In fact, this was precisely the creature that Momotaro (“peach boy”) fought in battle, whom is said to have origins in Okayama. Interestingly enough, Okayama is also famous for its high quality textiles and is a popular, if not the most popular, district for Japanese denim.

  • Name: Oni x Naked & Famous Denim
  • Weight: 14.5 Oz.
  • Denim: Unsanforized 100% Cotton Japanese Denim

Oni “Secret Denim” Jeans – Just Released

With denim being so popular a commodity, it can sometimes feel like a given fact of life; taken for granted. With fashion reverting to older and more classic styles, dark washes and raw denim are becoming more and more prominent and popular. (That’s not a bad thing, though.)

That’s why its so cool when companies like Oni release things like their new “Secret Denim” jeans. It’s sometimes nice to know that there is denim done differently by craftsmen with trade secrets.

With their latest release, Oni has used secret, unreleased techniques to create a new and interesting denim. Weighing in at a hefty 20 oz. per sq. yard, its their first release in the heavyweight category.

The Secret Denim also has a beige-dyed weft and rope-dyed indigo warp threads, which we expect will create some great vintage-style fades.

What Makes Japanese Denim So Special?

Selvedge Stripes on Japanese Denim

Selvedge denim is produced worldwide, but in the denim enthusiast community, Japanese denim is often praised above the rest. Many denimheads consider Japanese fabrics to be the best of all – but what, exactly, makes Japanese denim stand out in the minds of so many when compared to American, Italian, or Turkish denim? Is it all just hype, or are there real differences that give Japanese denim a unique edge?

The answer is, honestly, not necessarily. Not all selvedge denim is created equal, so while most selvedge denim is high quality, that selvedge line doesn’t automatically mean that it will age in a distinct manner or wear well over time. Denim produced on a Japanese selvedge loom can have radical variations in color, weight, and texture from one fabric to the next. By understanding how different characteristics affect denim’s aging, longevity, and appearance, you’ll be better equipped to find the right kind of denim for you and judge the quality of any particular denim.

Texture

First of all, Japanese denim is often made on old shuttle looms – not American Draper looms imported to Japan (as is sometimes thought in popular myth), but vintage Toyoda looms. When the Toyoda Model G was introduced in the 1920s it was a major advance for fabric weaving machinery, creating such loyalty that looms descended from the 1924 models are still used today by Japanese mills. Vintage Toyoda looms make fabric in very limited quantities – the typical roll of denim will be a little under three feet wide and the weaving processes is much slower than on modern machines.

1924 Toyoda shuttle loom

Modern looms, in comparison, are very fast and efficient plus make a precise and consistent fabric. The thing is, experienced denim fans don’t want precision – it’s actually the variation and imperfections of the weaving process that lend character to the best Japanese denim.

When comparing a nice sample of Japanese denim to a typical off-the-shelf pair of jeans, you’ll immediately notice the difference in texture – most jeans have a smooth surface, but Japanese denim is often surprisingly hairy or rough. This can often be quite intimidating at first for someone used to wearing soft, pre-faded jeans. Pure Blue Japan is renowned for its slubby fabric, faded Samurai denim has a complex, grainy texture, and The Flat Head is known for its heavy vertical fading. These qualities are accomplished by modifying the looms to chatter as they weave, creating a unique texture. Such brands often keep their exact weaving methods a carefully-guarded secret, such as Oni.

In contrast, selvedge looms set up to weave an even, neat roll of denim can produce a fabric that (aside from the selvedge line) is virtually the same as non-selvedge projectile denim. It’s worth learning as much as you can about the denim on a pair of jeans before you buy in order to determine what the fabric has to offer beyond a selvedge line. Just because a fabric is selvedge or even made in Japan doesn’t mean that it’s better than any other denim.

Color

Rope Dyeing

The dyeing process is traditionally a crucial ingredient in giving the best Japanese fabrics their flavor. Japan has a rich history of textile dyeing, dating back to kimonos from hundreds of years ago, a technique preserved today in techniques like kasuri dyeing. Likewise, Japanese denim is created with a variety of different proprietary dyeing processes.

One of the most striking properties of Japanese denim is the variation in color from one brand to another. While many recent Western brands use the same (admittedly high-quality) Cone White Oak selvedge denim on their jeans, this means that one pair will fade very similarly to the next.

On the other hand, the faded color of Japanese denims can be dramatically different from one brand to the next. Some brands, like Fullcount, Denime, or Warehouse excel in reproducing vintage American-style denim with a lighter overall color. Brands like Tenryo, The Strike Gold, and Pure Blue Japan produced dyed weft fabrics to give their denim unique fading properties, such as a gray or brown overcast. The Flat Head and Eternal use an extra-dark dyeing process to create denim that fades to a rich turquoise blue over time.

Weight

Another element of Japanese denim is the weight. While Japan produces plenty of lightweight fabrics, most denims of 20 oz. or more comes from Japan. Comparatively, most other types of denim weigh between 11 and 14 oz.

While weight is largely a matter of personal preference, the added durability of a heavyweight denim makes it appealing to many denim enthusiasts. Besides the additional toughness and warmth in cold weather, heavyweight denim tends to give thicker creases, and thus often faster or more defined fading than lighter materials.  However, just because denim is heavyweight, doesn’t mean that it will be longer-lasting than regular denim. Heavier denim puts more stress on the stitching, which can lead to faster thread breakage in some cases, especially on jeans with all-cotton stitching.

Processing

Another important factor in giving denim its character is the post-weaving processing involved – or a lack thereof.

Sanforization is the most familiar process, by which unwashed denim is “shrunk.” While unsanforized denim will experience considerable shrinkage from washing, sanforized denim usually doesn’t shrink much. Sanforized denim generally lasts longer than unsanforized; the main tradeoff being that it fades in a much softer manner, and high contrast doesn’t come as readily to sanforized denim. Sanforized fabrics are softer and smoother than unsanforized when new.

Singeing is the process by which the loose, hair-like fibers on the surface of the denim is burnt away, contributing to a smoother feel. Like sanforization, this process is extremely common on mass-produced denim. Most large companies are concerned with producing a fabric that’s immediately soft and comfortable. However, many high-quality raw varieties of denim are singed as well, such as some of R.J.B.’s fabrics.

Calendering – Calendering is a process where denim is evened out by passing through heavyweight rollers. Heat and pressure create a smoother, more comfortable fabric. Calendering contributes to the uniform appearance of most denim, like the other processes.

Mercerization – This process involves soaking the fabric in a chemical solution, which causes the fiber to swell. Mercerization also gives the denim a smooth sheen. It’s one of the final processes the denim undergoes.

Although many Japanese mills make fabrics with all of these processes, the high-end artisanal brands like Strike Gold and Studio D’Artisan, among others already mentioned, forgo these processes completely. This is called loomstate denim, and a few Japanese mills are among the only places in the world where true loomstate denim is still commonly produced.

The manner of processing can have dramatic ramifications for the feel, durability, and aging potential of a pair of jeans. For example, a pair that’s been sanforized, singed, and calendered, such as 3Sixteen’s SL-100x or Iron Heart’s 634S, will be comfortable when new and won’t need to be soaked before wearing. The wearer can enjoy a raw pair of jeans that will have a unique shine before the first wash, and if well-maintained the denim will last for a long time due to the even composition.

The smooth, even texture of sanforized denim.

The smooth, more even texture of sanforized denim.

By contrast, a pair of loomstate jeans, such as Samurai’s S710xx or Flat Head’s 3005 will have a much rougher, hairy, and uneven feel and appearance. These jeans can be harder to deal with, between trying to correctly determine your size and effectively shrinking to the proper size, and the less uniform nature of the denim can make it less durable than sanforized fabrics. However, the payoff is a sharper, more defined quality to the creases and points of stress, as well as a more textured appearance to the denim.

Unsanforized denim - note the uneven, sharper texture.

Unsanforized denim, uneven, sharper texture.

It’s worth pointing out that just because denim is Japanese, there is absolutely no guarantee that it will have these characteristics. Many Japanese fabrics are sanforized, treated, and have a less complex texture. Just because a brand boasts that their fabric is made in Japan, there is no certainty that it will have any of these qualities. The best Japanese denim is distinguished by the indigo dyeing processes, the weight and weave of the denim, and the texture of the final product. All of these factors contribute to a pair of jeans that is designed to show optimal evolution over time.

It’s this combination of qualities that give Japanese denim a unique character rarely seen on other fabrics. While other denim mills are quite capable of producing denim with similar qualities – particularly when it comes to forgoing post-weave processing – most are more concerned with speed, efficiency, and consistency.  By re-discovering the virtues of a rough and unrefined fabric, other denim mills might one day produce their own fabrics rivaling the qualities of Japanese denim.

Particularly due to the rising interest in jeans made entirely in America, Cone Mills has experienced a resurgence of activity; however, their denim is mostly sanforized and undergoes other processing.  Last year, however, the mill introduced their first loomstate fabric in over sixty years, made exclusively for Roy. Perhaps someday soon, some enterprising individuals would be willing to start their own denim mill on American soil, dedicated to special batches of artisian denim on the same level of uniqueness as Japanese fabrics.

Exploring 5 Pairs Of Lighter-Colored Raw Denim Jeans

MainFall is nearly here, and Winter isn’t far, but just because your days will be darker doesn’t mean your denim has to be. Following on the heels of the reemerging trend of dad jeans, we decided it only made sense to look to five pairs of lighter-colored options for those who wish to stay raw while sporting a lighter hue.

It turns out that there are plenty of options for those looking to lighten their look, and while this is by no means an exhaustive list, we chose to turn our focus to the following five pairs.

1. Naked & Famous – Vintagecast Broken-Twill

NF Vintage

We’ve come to expect innovation from the Canadian brand, and this pair of denim is no exception. In this case, they’re innovating by looking backwards, as this denim’s hue hearkens back to bygone days, with a much lighter, almost electric blue. This offering is the third generation of the broken-twill series, the original being the greencast followed up by the royalcast.

The jeans are marketed as a raw option to the traditional indigo. Not only is the color distinct, but the broken-twill denim also offers a relatively unique option from the right-hand and left-hand twills featured by many brands. It’s available in WeirdGuy and SkinnyGuy fits.

Details

  • Name: Naked & Famous Vintagecast Blue Selvedge
  • Weight: 12.5 Oz.
  • Denim: Japanese vintagecast broken-twill in indigo
  • Fit: WeirdGuy and SkinnyGuy
  • Available at: Blue Owl for $155.00 YSD

2. Big John – M1 Straight Leg Ruri

Big John M1 Straight Leg Ruri

BIG JOHN is one of the original Japanese denim companies leading the charge in the repro movement; paying close attention to vintage details and offering products that display a respect for what has come before.

The M1 Straight Leg Ruri is a “cowboy jean”, with a high waist and slight taper in the leg. The denim itself has been dyed only 3/4 of the normal amount, accounting for the lighter color seen in denim of the past which BIG JOHN refers to as, “ruri.”   The jeans also feature fully printed pocket bags and a gold selvedge line.

Details

  • Name: BIG JOHN M1 Straight Leg Ruri
  • Weight: 14.5 Oz.
  • Denim: Japanese raw red-eyed gold selvedge
  • Fit: Straight with a slightly tapered leg
  • Available at: Tate + Yoko for $185.00 USD

3. Oni Denim – Low Tension 20oz Secret Denim Tapered Leg

Oni Denim - Low Tension 20oz Secret Denim Tapered Leg

Oni is as big of an enigma as far as companies go, as there isn’t too much out there about the company itself. In fact, their owner, Mr. Oishi, forgoes dealing with the press in order to focus as much time and energy on their denim. This particular pair, the Low-Tension 20 Oz. Secret Denim, as the name suggests, is made with techniques which are kept under wraps.

What we do know though is that the weft yarns are dyed beige for “a color reminiscent of cotton growing in the wild”. While not as light as the previous two pairs above, the denim does have a deep blue which is lighter than traditional indigo. However it was made, it’s most certainly intriguing.

Details

  • Name: Oni Low-Tension 20 Oz. Secret Denim Tapered Leg
  • Weight: 20 Oz.
  • Denim: Oni Japanese rope-dyed selvedge denim with beige weft
  • Fit: Mid/high rise with a tapered leg
  • Available at: Blue in Green for $325.00 USD

4. Samurai Jeans – 17oz S0210XJII-RR Limited Edition

Samurai Jeans - 17oz S0210XJII-RR Limited Edition

Samurai hardly needs an introduction as it has grown to become one of the most popular Japanese denim companies. They’re renowned for their attention to detail, and this pair lives up to the brand’s reputation with a whole slew of special detailing.

The “RR” in the title stands for “Revival and Reproduction”, a limited edition jean complete with a 15th-anniversary coin pouch and button. The warp is pure indigo with grey-dyed weft yarn, giving it the left-hand-twill denim a subdued cast. The light blue is offset by the contrast yellow stitching, and the denim comes complete with a selvedge line that features a single thread of silver lamé.

Details

  • Name: Samurai S0210XJII-RR
  • Weight: 17 Oz.
  • Denim: Japanese “Sword Selvage”; left-hand-twill selvedge denim with indigo warp and grey weft
  • Fit: Mid-rise with slightly tapered leg
  • Available at: Blue in Green for $345.00

5. Fullcount – 1108 Selvage Sweat Fleece Denim

Fullcount - 1108 Selvage Sweat Fleece Denim

Fullcount has been around for more than twenty years and was the first Japanese company to use Zimbabwe cotton. They’ve been offering classic cuts in raw denim since 1992 and they consistently produce unique goods. While the other denim on the list boasts more of a blue shade, we couldn’t resist including this pair for it’s intriguing materials and enigmatic coloring; a subtle white which is almost grey.

One can only wonder what the hand is like. Sweat fleece warp threads are interwoven with denim weft yarns to create the jeans, accounting for the uneven texture. Complete with a goat-leather patch, this pair offers something completely different than your traditional indigo.

Details

  • Name: Fullcount 1108 Sweat Fleece Selvage Denim
  • Weight: 13.75 Oz.
  • Denim: Japanese sweat fleece warp with denim weft selvedge
  • Fit: Straight with regular rise
  • Available at: Blue in Green for $76.25 (note only 38 and 40 are available)

Of course these are only a few options in a sea of lighter-colored denim out there. If there are any alternatives we’ve missed that you enjoy, sound off in the comments below!

The Complete Raw Denim Patch Collection

The little details that go into a pair of jeans can often be overlooked by the less discerning consumer. Only the most passionate denimheads care about chainstitches, selvedge lines, and tucked waistbands. But there are two design details few can overlook: the back pocket arcuate–which we highlighted recently–and the design of a brand’s patch. These allow for a designer’s artistic spirit to make a statement, one that might convince or deter a consumer from purchasing their creation.

With this in mind, we’ve assembled a near complete raw denim patch collection of the brands we know and love. Over a hundred raw denim-producing brands have been included, spanning one man operations to enormous denim manufacturers. Some reproduce the old guard’s patches to a near infringing level, while others use a completely original design, while some forgo the patch altogether.

We are only displaying one patch per brand due to space constraints, but many brands have numerous patches and some–like Sugar Cane or Kamikaze Attack–have a different patch for each model. We’ve picked the patches that we feel are most representative of the brand. As always, sound off in the comments section below with any favorite brands we may have overlooked.

The Complete Raw Denim Patch Collection

$

Today’s Fade of the Day was sent to us by Thomas Burke of London who’s only worn his Oni 517XX‘s for 8 months. In such a short time, though, they’ve have already seen repairs. He puts them to work everyday at his job, where he’ll often have to take measurements for customers’ hems. You can tell pretty obviously that his dominant knee is the right one.

Keep up with Thomas on Instagram.

  • Weight: 16.5 oz.

Wearing your jeans every day is the only prescription when it comes to raw denim. Results will vary but you can be well on your way to greater fades down the line. For Sandika Akbar, 10 months was all he needed to develop some healthy fades.

With 3 washes and a single soak under his belt, his Oni 552‘s have maintained an overall brighter blue with the lightest areas at the thighs. Up close, you can really see the texture of Oni’s “Secret Denim” come to life with plenty of slub. In another 10 months’ time, we can only imagine that there won’t be much indigo left.

Details

  • Name: Oni 552
  • Fabric: Natural indigo “Secret” Denim
  • Weight: 20oz.
  • Fit: Slim
  • Unique features:
    • Hidden rivets

Oni Denim 16oz. Green Cast Kihannen Relax Tapered

Green cast denim doesn’t get as much love as it ought, so the latest from Oni Denim is here. If you haven’t tried your legs at a pair, you can get going with their Green Cast Kihannen Relax Tapered jean all summer ’16.

There’s so much vertical slub on this denim you can expect some super streaky fades later on. The silhouette is comfortably tailored with a relaxed fit in the top block and a tapered leg so you don’t look like a slob in your slubs. And as per usual, Oni details like hidden rivets, roped belt loops, and continuously stitched leather patch are all here.

Available for $178 at Denimio.

ONI-502ZR-20oz.-Secret-Denim-front-and-back-flat

Holy crotch repairs, Batman! Today’s amazing fades also come with some serious work done to these jeans’ crotch that’ll make you look twice. This pair of ONI 502ZR Secret Denim come to use from Okti Giffari of Indonesia.

After two years of daily wear, including nine washes and six soaks, these heavily faded jeans were retired in 2014. Both the whiskers and honeycombs are impressive, and are not overly loud for a pair of heavyweight jeans but are instead beautifully water-like. Perhaps that’s why this denim is just so secret…

Denimio’s Oni vs. Samurai Battle for Glory Contest Jeans

Denimio's-Oni-vs.-Samurai-Denim-Contest-Jeans

It’s the battle of our lifetime. Who is king of the slub? Denimio pits Oni against Samurai for a year-long fade contest to settle the debate. The ultimate prize for the fade champion is a trip to Japan. The top three will get the chance to help design a jean with Denimio as well as a pair for themselves. Contestants will be put to the test along the way with some interesting challenges maniacally schemed by the Denimio team and we’re sure there will be some who just can’t take it.

With Samurai’s unsanforized 19oz. denim in both their S710 and S510 cuts, against ONI’s 16.5oz. denim in their 517XX, 512XX, and 277XX cuts, there’s no excuse not to enlist.

The jeans are available for pre-order now and all you have to decide is whether you’re #TeamOni or #TeamSamurai.

You may have seen our recent coverage of the latest Denimio contest in which Oni Denim and Samurai battle it out for the title of Slub-Lord Millionaire. Well, Oni is back with another new release, this time in double indigo – the 512IDID Indigo x Indigo Relax Skinny Jeans.

Not to worry, there’s plenty of slub in these bad boys as well; not to mention some other notable features, like laurel wreath buttons and white selvedge ID. The fit is relaxed from the knees up with plenty of room to move, and then tapers down tightly near the ankles. Stealthy matching arcuates are sure to pop over time when the inevitable fading begins. Until then, rejoice in Oni’s dark indigo glory.

Available for $198 at Denimio.

Five Plus One is our weekly series of buyer’s guides. We pick a specific category and dig up five great options along with one that’s a little outside the norm.

Sooner or later, every denimhead forays into the world of heavyweight denim. And due to heavy denim’s recent rise in popularity, there are more options now than every before.

Whether you want some heavy denim because of its durable nature, propensity to yield highly contrasting fades or something else entirely, there’s a new pair of jeans waiting for you somewhere – and we’re here to help you find them.

1) Unbranded: 231 Heavyweight Indigo/Black

Unbranded 231 Heavyweight Indigo/Black Raw Denim Jean

Say what you will about Unbranded, but you have to admit they make some of the best introductory raw denim on the market. Their new 21oz. Indigo/Black denim is not designed to introduce raw denim to new customers, but rather to introduce exciting fabrics to already indoctrinated denim fans. Both the dark weft and heavyweight fabric lends themselves well to highly contrasting fades, so the combined fading ability should be phenomenal.

Available for $128 from Blueowl.

2) The Flat Head: 2111 20Oz. Slim Tapered

The Flat Head 2111 20Oz. Slim Tapered raw denim jeans

Every pair of raws is a significant commitment – when you plan to wear the same pair of jeans for years to come, it has to be perfect. While I won’t say that The Flat Head‘s 2111 20 oz. Jeans are the right pair for everyone; the denim has a lot of the features we like to see. The fabric is heavy with lots of irregularities, primarily nep and hairy yarns. Combine those factors with its goat skin patch, rope-dyed indigo yarns, and hidden rivets, and you’ve got a recipe for a fantastic pair of jeans.

Available for $325 from Tate + Yoko.

3) Oldblue. Co: 8.25″ 25Oz. – Fifth Anniversary Edition

Oldblue. Co 8.25" 25Oz. Fifth Anniversary Edition Raw Denim Jeans

Oldblue Co. might not be a name you’re too familiar with, but they create some amazing pairs of jeans. One of their newest styles, the 8.25″ 25oz., is particularity interesting due to its ultra-heavy loomstate fabric, copper rivets, and herringbone pocket bags. The cut is a bit fuller than many people might like, but that is certainly going to make these jeans a lot easier to break in.

Available for $187 from Oldblue Co.

4) Studio d’Artisan: SD-307 Unsanforized 18.5Oz.

If you absolutely want a tight fitting pair of jeans but don’t want to settle for something lightweight, the Studio d’Artisan 307s might be right up your alley. The jeans are made from an unsanforized 18.5oz. fabric,  woven from natural-indigo dyed warp yarns and white wefts yarns, which results in a slightly lighter hue than many of the other pairs on this list. The color and texture of these jeans are to die for, so they should make the shortlist for tight-fitting heavyweight jeans.

Available for $260 from Okayama Denim.

5) Iron Heart: 8301s Super Black Fade-to-Grey

Iron Heart 8301s Super Black Fade-to-Grey Raw Denim Jeans

If there is one company known for heavyweight denim, it’s Iron Heart. They have heavyweight jeans up that are up to 25oz., but you can get pairs that are lighter (while still being subjectively heavy) in just about any weight you want. Their 8301s are a particularly interesting pair that is made from a 21oz. black denim; normally, black jeans don’t fade the same way as indigo jeans, but these jeans are dyed in such a way that they will fade to grey.

Available for $325 from Self Edge.

Plus One – Oni: 5460LZR 20Oz. Olive Denim

Oni 5460LZR 20Oz. Olive Raw Denim Jeans

Raw denim is a niche market. Heavyweight raw denim is a niche market within a niche market. So how do you determine an off-the-beaten-path Plus One item that is already part of the hyper-niche? Well luckily, Oni made my job easy this week. Their 5460LZR 20 oz. Jeans are made from their Secret denim, a fabric famous for its irregularities and highly textured nature. But this time, it is dyed to a unique, olive-taupe hue. It’s a gorgeous color partway between green, grey, beige, and brown – hard to describe, but beautiful to look at.

Available for $215 from Blue in Green

Fade-of-the-Day-Oni-Denim-546ZR-Front

Hold on to your indigo caps, it’s time for another Fade of the Day! Jason from NYC sent us his pair of Oni Denim 546ZR‘s at five months in and two soaks, and they have a lot of character to show for it. This is a pivotal moment in a pair of jeans life span as the indigo hue starts to lighten and the true fade marks start to take shape, as can be seen here with the distinct formation of some tight honeycombs and pocket fades throughout.

As far as how they were achieved, Jason tells us he pretty much rides his motorcycle to work, sits behind a computer and occasionally fixes that bike on the weekends and not much else. Whatever it is, keep it up and these things will be Fade Friday worthy before the year is over.
